Bread for the City
Representatives of our firm toured the new facility in December, seeing first-hand how Bread for the City will provide significantly more aid to thousands over the coming years.
For the second year Koonz McKenney would like to shine a light on the important mission of Bread for the City providing vulnerable residents of Washington, DC with comprehensive services including food, clothing, medical care, legal, and social services in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. Their vision allows residents access to the basic resources they need for survival and growth, and the prosperity of their social, emotional, and spiritual lives.
Thanks to generous donations, dedicated staff, and volunteers, Bread for the City has expanded its Northwest Center. The grand opening of the 11,000 square foot expansion was held on January 7th of this year. The additional space will serve to make the area more accessible to its 5,000 residents, with expectations to serve even more residents in the coming years. The larger space will provide numerous benefits to the organization with their services:
- Medical Clinic: currently serving 3,000 patients with 9,000 visits annually, larger space and additional examination rooms will allow for twice as many patients and three times as many visits in the future. A dental suite and vision room have also been added with the goal for them to become fully operational within five years.
- Food Pantry: to accommodate thousands of residents who visit each month, the new food pantry has additional storage capacity as well as improved accessibility for strollers and wheelchairs.
- Intake/Counseling Rooms: Bread for the City has provided thousands of hours of free legal advice and social services visits towards residents. The new space will allow for privacy regarding sensitive case management matters.
- Green Roof: now the biggest agricultural rooftop project in Washington, DC, starting in April the roof will include a garden that will be used to grow vegetables and increase access to fresh produce.
Bread for the City has taken an active stance to help low income families within Washington, DC area. Our firm is proud to support their continuing efforts to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and to rectify the conditions that perpetuate it.

Kelly Fisher Continues as the WBA’s Co-Chair for the Community Projects Committee
Kelly Fisher continues to serve as a co-chair for the Women’s Bar Association’s Community Projects Committee. Earlier in 2010, she helped organize an event with A Wider Circle at Johnson Middle School in Southeast D.C. WBA members and their families spent the day preparing a portion of Johnson Middle School to be used for summer school by scrubbing the floors, cleaning lockers, and organizing classrooms. It was hard work but well worth it!
Law Firm Collects Donations for Baby Shower Baskets
In November 2010, Kelly Fisher helped organize a donation drive with the Women’s Bar Association for A Wider Circle’s Well Mother, Well Baby Program. Employees at Koonz, McKenney, Johnson, DePaolis & Lightfoot contributed money and items for baby shower baskets. In total, the WBA was able to donate 17 baby baskets to be giving to expecting mothers.
